Bruncheon! feat Graeme Mearns, Doug Johnstone & Candythief + Junk Percussion W’shop
Saturday 8th April 2017
11.30am - 2.30pm, free entry (£1 entry to Jumble Sale)
For our April Bruncheon we team up with Re-Act Scotland for a fundraising Jumble Sale and Junk Percussion Workshop. The Bruncheon Audience will become the musicians as we help you create your own unique percussion instruments from the things we find and often throw away. Funds raised will support refugees and the event is a great opportunity to have fun, eat a great kipper breakfast and hear how delicious chickpeas sound and taste! Materials will be provided but feel free to bring your own along as well as your ideas!
And hitting the Bruncheon live stage…
Graeme Mearns is a master of spooky jazz and psychedelic-swing, inflecting his songs with a certain je ne sais qui voodoo doctor swagger. His ‘Acoustic Swing’ show in the festival got rave reviews. Live performances are characterised by energetic Django-style jazz rhythm guitar, frenetic interpretations of some unexpected covers and a smattering of engaging personal anecodote in which he transmits his love of music. https://www.facebook.com/TheGMBand/app/6452028673/
Doug Johnstone is a musician, novelist and journalist living in Edinburgh. He’s released two solo EPs and five albums with his lo-fi band Northern Alliance. He’s had eight novels published and has worked as an arts journalist for almost two decades.” This one sentence resume in no way does justice to the considerable contribution to the Scottish arts via bands like the Northern Alliance. Doug’s huge enthusiasm and curiosity is probably why as well as having a Phd in Nuclear Physics, he is at the forefront of a literary blossoming in Scotland with a clutch of books dominating the contemporary Scottish thriller.
BBC Introducing artist Candythief, aka anglo-euro songwriter Diana de Cabarrus, first emerged in association with Fife micro label Fence records. Drawing on alternative, acoustic, psych pop, indie influences with a touch of chanson, the songs are melody-driven, occasionally theatrical, hopping between styles, and coloured by unusual song-structures. On record and live, Candythief is refreshingly distinctive and unusual, with live performances featuring a line up of cello, guitar, accordion, mandolin, bodhran and sometimes loops.
