November News

Five years ago Out of the Blue created Out of the Blueprint as a social enterprise print studio based at the Out of the Blue Drill Hall.  Since we started Out of the Blueprint, we’ve worked with over 200 young artists from across Scotland. From our hometown of Leith, to Glasgow, Dundee, Aberdeen and beyond, we’ve been blown away by the talent, creativity & perseverance we’ve seen from comic-creators, illustrators and artists.

The exhibition Walk Don’t Walk, currently installed in the Drill Hall, marks Out of the Blueprint’s fifth birthday with a range of diverse new work by 20 of Scotland’s finest young artists, comic makers and illustrators.  Printed at the Out of the Blueprint studio, the artwork forms part of an installation by Drill Hall studio based architects & designers Biomorphis, filling the main hall with a huge RISO machine-inspired structure.

It’s a strange time to be celebrating, but we think it’s important to look forward with optimism and do what we can to support the next generation of artists. Walk Don’t Walk is our way of marking this moment, and offering a bright, colourful and uplifting view of the future.

Making the most of the airy atrium, the exhibition offers the opportunity to safely immerse yourself in a world of risograph artwork!  If you need a change of scenery, please do help support us, the artists and the cafe by visiting us this month.

Out of the Blue are proud owners of the ‘A listed’ Drill Hall in Dalmeny Street, Leith. We pride ourselves on the work that we undertook almost 20 years ago to buy the building. We are also proud of the refurbishment which kept the integrity of the historically and architecturally significant site, and produced the spaces which have over the years enabled many thousands of people to come through our doors to learn, work, perform, rehearse, exhibit, be creative, eat, drink and socialise.

Whilst we have positioned the current exhibition to dodge the rain drops which keep falling on our heads, we aim to use the ongoing period of COVID related restrictions on gatherings, to undertake repairs to the Drill Hall roof.

We do appreciate that there are many people and organisations in dire need during these challenging times however we are asking all of our supporters to help us if they can.

We know that many of you will have nothing to spare, but if you can make a donation to support us, click here.

Thank you!

Over the course of 2024 Out of the Blue will continue to offer opportunities for artists and members of the community to learn, participate and earn income.

We use the space we have developed in 6 buildings in Edinburgh for studios, workshops, classes, projects, exhibitions, social enterprises, events, clubs, music making, markets, a cafe and more.

Our all year round activity helps create the culture of the city, supporting the local economy and having positive social impact for the thousands of individuals and organisations we work with.

We would humbly accept a financial donation, however small, in support of our work.
