You, Me & Cold War Steve – The International Exhibition of the People
Friday 17th September - Thursday 14th October 2021
10am - 5pm, Monday to Saturday, free entry
“A long overdue mash-up of Hogarth, Bosch, Johnson and Wetherspoon is coming to the Drill Hall”
In the spring of 2020 Cold War Steve was all set to launch his new – worldwide! – exhibition project. Conceived as a follow up to the hit debut ’A Brief History of the World (1953-2018)’, Out of the Blue was on hand to ensure Edinburgh wouldn’t miss out. Then came the Covid…
2021 saw Cold War Steve return and double down with even more images. The “International Exhibition of the People” can be seen throughout Britain in local libraries, pubs, front rooms, back gardens, doctors surgeries, music venues… and even in galleries. The images are hosted on a public link for anyone to download and put up anywhere they choose. At the Out of the Blue Drill Hall we will be showing images from both 2020 and 2021 – some 50 images: a weird travel back in time seen through a dark and at times farcical lens.
More than just a collection of images, the exhibition is about people coming together and enjoying and discussing the artwork, explaining who Alan Brazil is to the younger viewers, debating the inclusion of Shipman and West, and of course, spotting Cilla. Adequate fun for the whole community.
Cold War Steve aka Christopher Spencer is an artist from Birmingham, England who specialises in surreal and satirical collages originally made on his phone and iPad while commuting on a train to work, thereby creating a new aesthetic for the 21st Century.
Since 2016 he has posted artwork almost daily to his Twitter account, as well as creating several solo exhibitions, publishing two books with Thames & Hudson, and undertaking commissions for the National Galleries of Scotland, The Whitworth in Manchester, as well as a giant billboard installation at Glastonbury Festival and an international TIME magazine cover.
The exhibition is open to the public Monday – Saturday 10am – 5pm until 14th October 2021. Free entry.
