What’s On This Month

Freeze Frame is back with a special screening at the Drill Hall of Wes Anderson’s The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou on Sunday 6th October. Join us for a film-inspired pre-show meal (or just the film and some popcorn!).

Out of the Blueprint will host their latest and ever-popular Riso Workshop on Saturday 5th October. It’s sold out but they’ll be back with more workshops soon, so just keep an eye on their website.

As part of the Scottish Mental Health Arts Festival, OOTB resident artists Active Inquiry perform their new play The Truth About Ageing on Tuesday 22nd October. It explores how we want society to view ageing and older age.

On Friday 18th and Saturday 19th OctoberOut of the Blue Abbeymount Studios residents HelloArt will be taking over the Main Hall in the Drill Hall with their Asian Culture Market. Their first Asian-themed market in Edinburgh, it showcases the vibrant fusion of Eastern and Western cultures.

If you’re looking for some Autumn bargains, our October Flea Market takes place on Saturday 26th October. Over 40 stalls packed with pre-loved clothes, jewellery, books and other collectibles.

Did you know we have our own range of Preserves, produced in-house at the Drill Hall Cafe? We make small batch jams, pickles and chutneys from rescued food using time-honoured methods and traditional recipes. They’re the perfect accompaniment to your morning toast, or a sandwich, and are available to purchase from the Drill Hall Cafe.

Just before we hit October, the Drill Hall will be taking part in Doors Open Day on Saturday 28th September. There are free hourly behind-the-scenes tours from 11am to 1pm, including visits to some of our artists in their studios. Our monthly Flea Market will also be on from 10am to 3pm.

We’re Hiring!

We’re currently recruiting for part-time Duty Managers at the Drill Hall. Working weekday evenings and Saturdays, we are looking for flexible, proactive, energetic individuals to work on a rota basis. The deadline to apply is 10am on Monday 7th October. More information can be found on our website.

Celebrating 30 Years of Out of the Blue

As part of our celebrations, we asked several members of our community “what’s good about Out of the Blue”. This month we hear from Amanda McGrattan who’s worked from her studio in the Precious Metals Workshop at the Drill Hall for 7 years. You can watch her video here

Stay tuned to our social media as we bring you more over the coming months! In the meantime read on to find out more about what’s coming up in October.

Over the course of 2024 Out of the Blue will continue to offer opportunities for artists and members of the community to learn, participate and earn income.

We use the space we have developed in 6 buildings in Edinburgh for studios, workshops, classes, projects, exhibitions, social enterprises, events, clubs, music making, markets, a cafe and more.

Our all year round activity helps create the culture of the city, supporting the local economy and having positive social impact for the thousands of individuals and organisations we work with.

We would humbly accept a financial donation, however small, in support of our work.
