Jewellery and Silversmithing at The Precious Metals Workshop
Established in 2010 by Goldsmith Ian Nicholson and located in Edinburgh’s creative space Out of the Blue, the Precious Metals Workshop (PMW) is Edinburgh’s leading independent workshop for goldsmiths, silversmiths, jewellers and hobbyists. It is a safe space for creative minds, home to a family of makers who share their knowledge and skills while inspiring each other and benefiting from an artisan vibe within the workshop.
The PMW run 3 terms of courses and weekend workshops a year which are suitable for all levels of skills. Each term has 2 sets of night classes for beginners, which last for 10 weeks and various specialised weekend workshops. The programme changes each term so it is best to check their website for details.
The Precious Metals Workshop is a community of makers, where they share knowledge, skills and inspire each other as creative individuals. There are benches available to rent with a large range of specialised equipment including soldering stations, pickling tanks, wheel and barrel polishers, ultrasonic tank, bubble etching tanks for copper and silver, fly press, ring stretchers, stone setting tools, heavy duty vices, bench drills, hammering stumps, silversmithing hammers, draw bench and plates, metal guillotine, rolling mill, and a small enamelling kiln. There is also an extensive collection of resource books on techniques and practices to support both emerging and established makers.
The PMW have a partnership working alongside Edinburgh VOCAL and Edinburgh’s Women’s Aid providing bench space and courses to service users. For details of upcoming workshops and classes at the Precious Metals Workshop, please visit preciousmetalsworkshop.com
