Explore and Draw Sketchbook Workshop
Sat 13th & Sun 14th April 2013
explore and draw!
In this weekend workshop students will be drawing from the unique built environment of Edinburgh’s Old Town. Using a variety of materials and expressive mark making techniques you will be encouraged to describe the city’s architectural forms, using the drawn mark to explore and respond to the substance and presence, the rhythms and structures of the world around you.
On the Saturday morning, after an informal discussion about sketchbooks, we will head along to the Cowgate and Grassmarket.
You will be provided with a sketchbook and a variety of different drawing materials and prepared concoctions.
You will be encouraged to see it, draw it, think about it later. Not to worry about finished drawings but rather to gather visual information about the things which are of interest to YOU.
These ideas will then be revisited in the studio and pushed further whilst the experience is still fresh in your mind. Students will use a range of media to continue exploring their ideas and have the chance to prepare surfaces with a mind to going out sketching again the following day.
A sketchbook is a visual notebook and should be made entirely for yourself. You can be indulgent and cram it full of marks and surfaces, colours and thoughts. l hope students will realise how easily a sketchbook can be carried with them and used to record all manner of visual information that they can then use to inform their artistic practice.
