March 2018 News

Thursday 1st March 2018

Along the road from The Out of the Blue Drill Hall at the former tram depot on Leith Walk, We are building a local hub that puts community collaboration at the heart of developing plans. Our vision is that from June 2018 until 2021 we will create an ever-evolving, socially inclusive space, where people can meet and share ideas in a welcoming and vibrant place. Visit Leith Chooses to see how to vote for ‘funding for the communities ‘Meanwhile… in Leith Hub‘ project.’

Also along the road from the Drill Hall, Out of the Blue Abbeymount Studios is growing and developing. The new batch of classes offer opportunities to explore, experiment, discover and develop your skills in areas of contemporary craft and design.

As ever the Drill Hall continues to host a busy programme of events in March. Highlights include Expo – Spring 2018: The market for Mid 20th Century Modern furniture and design which offers a wide range of original designer furniture, restored soft furnishings, collectable glass, ceramics, fabric and art work (25th).

Our regular Flea Market includes over 45 stalls full to bursting with clothes, jewellery, small furniture, music, books, bric-a-brac and so much more. Once you’re done with your bargain hunting, stop in for lunch at the Drill Hall Arts Cafe which offers a delicious range of home-style cooking, cakes and more!

Bruncheon featuring Candythief and Tiny Feet (10th) is running in conjunction with the Edinburgh Fair Trade Festival. The following Saturday, come along to a family friendly celebration bringing diverse communities together around environmental themes at the Edinburgh Climate Festival (17th).

Wiff Waff Wednesday (28th) is a highly convivial monthly ping pong night for all ages with music, drink and great food from the Drill Hall Arts Cafe. Friendship 1st, competition 2nd.

Our latest enterprise Out of the Blueprint is a risograph print studio at the Out of the Blue Drill Hall, offering affordable, eco-friendly printing and supporting young artists. The project is gaining much deserved acclaim. Visit the studio for a guided tour to see what’s possible with this remarkably creative print process.

Over the course of 2024 Out of the Blue will continue to offer opportunities for artists and members of the community to learn, participate and earn income.

We use the space we have developed in 6 buildings in Edinburgh for studios, workshops, classes, projects, exhibitions, social enterprises, events, clubs, music making, markets, a cafe and more.

Our all year round activity helps create the culture of the city, supporting the local economy and having positive social impact for the thousands of individuals and organisations we work with.

We would humbly accept a financial donation, however small, in support of our work.
