About renting a studio space

Spaces are allocated utilising a policy which tries to offer appropriate space to artists and organisations from a range of disciplines. Across all our sites, studio holders have 24 hour access to their studios and they are easily accessible by public transport. Read on to find out more about the types of spaces that we offer.

Allocation of Space

When studios become available they will be advertised to the Available Studios Mailing List in the first instance. There is no average waiting time, but in order to maximise your opportunity of finding a studio, we would recommend applying as early as possible and being as flexible as you can in terms of space requirements.

Subletting and Sharing

Occasionally artists may choose to share their studio or sub-let for a short period. Shares tend to be organised by the artists themselves, although they must be agreed with Out of the Blue. Sometimes an artist will ask Out of the Blue to find a suitable sharer, in which case, this opportunity will be advertised to the studio mailing list and given to the person whom the artist feels is most suitable. Artists may sub-let studios and this must be arranged through Out of the Blue. Again the place will be advertised to the mailing list and given to the person whom the artist feels is most suitable.

License Information

After an initial period (usually three months) only one month’s notice is required from either party to end the contract. Out of the Blue believes that the best way to support artists, whose workload and therefore income may be unpredictable, is to offer the most flexible, low-commitment terms possible.

Conditions of licence include payment of a returnable deposit and payment of rent by standing order monthly and in advance.

Spaces at

OOTB DRILL HALL

We have studios and offices in the Out of the Blue Drill Hall in Dalmeny Street, off Leith Walk. These are occupied by artists and creative businesses. The Out of the Blue Drill Hall is a thriving cultural hub and studios share the building with events, classes and the lovely Drill Hall Arts Café. It’s also easily accessible by both bus and tram. In recent years Drill Hall artists and makers have organised a series of popular and successful exhibitions in the Main Hall event space.

If you are interested in renting one of our studios, or wish to be contacted regarding any future available studios, please sign up to our Available Studios Mailing List and you will be invited to the next available viewing.

Shared studio & workshop

OOTB Abbeymount Studios

The facilities at Abbeymount Studios include purpose built workshops with tools and equipment for fashion and textile design, fine art, ceramics and printmaking. In our co-working spaces each resident artist has desk space to work from and to store materials.

We believe that colleagues and peer support improves productivity and prevents isolation for the self-employed artist and maker. We also arrange Open Studios events as well as exhibitions at the Out of the Blue Drill Hall to help promote artists’ work.
