Sinc 2004

A vibrant, fun and inclusive artists hub

A large former military drill hall transformed into a participatory and inclusive arts and cultural centre, with artists’ studios, rehearsal and performance areas, exhibition spaces and a well-reviewed café.

Aims and Ambitions

To accommodate a range of art and artists in studios, with space for exhibitions, workshops, classes and a range of events in a building of considerable historical and contemporary value to the people of Leith and beyond.

History

The Drill Hall was purchased as a B-listed building in 2004 by Out of the Blue Arts and Education Trust. Since then it’s been painstakingly repaired and refurbished, becoming a landmark and hub for the local community. In 2017 it was upgraded to Category A status by Historic Environment Scotland.

What Happens Here

As well as home to over 150 artists, organisations and social enterprises based in studios, we have a vibrant cafe and an exciting programme of events, workshops and exhibitions throughout the year. From art exhibitions and aerial classes to jewellery workshops and a monthly flea market, there’s something for everyone.

The Future

Consolidate and thrive as a significant economically and environmentally sustainable space for a hybrid of arts practice, participatory education, enterprise, creativity, listed building preservation and improvement, for the benefit of individuals, groups, collective initiatives and the local community.
