Alan graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone in 2002 with a BA (Hons) in Drawing and Painting and he now paints from his studio, based in Edinburgh, inspired by its historical surroundings.
Primarily using oil paints to create, he has also worked using many different mediums either as a reaction to the subject matter or it has been by request for commissions. This for example led to creating constructed textile artworks for the elderly and visually impaired when he was working alongside an interior designer.
Whether the subject is a portrait, figurative, still life, abstract, urban or rural, the underlying inspiration and primary consideration is always the human aspect from the relationship people have with a place they inhabit or the place that lives within a person and the inner perception of self that inspires.
The art is in capturing or evoking a mood, atmosphere and emotion.
