Helen Miles is a mosaic artist with a reputation as a maker of finely executed pieces often inspired by ancient mosaics but with a contemporary feel.
She studied with master crafts people in Thessaloniki and Athens and specialises in making site specific mosaics for interior and exterior spaces using unglazed porcelain and glass. She also delights in using found and recycled materials from shells and broken pottery to single use plastics and hardware.
With more than 20 years’ experience, her commissioned work ranges from house entranceways to domestic panels, memorial mosaics and pieces designed to celebrate a special occasion.
‘I have always loved things which are made by the slow and deliberate accumulation of parts whether they be the dry-stone walls of the north or a sentence that contains all that needs to be said. So it is with mosaics,’ says Helen.
Helen is also an experienced mosaic teacher who brings together students with diverse abilities and inspires enthusiasm in the process and pride in the results.
In addition to running day-long workshops from her Out of the Blue studio, she teaches longer courses at different locations including West Dean in Sussex and Mulranny Arts in Ireland.
She published Make Your Own Mosaics: Ancient Techniques to Contemporary Art with White Owl Press in 2022.
