Rana Plaza Photography Exhibition + Film Screening

Rana Plaza, an eight-story commercial building, collapsed in Savar, a sub-district in the Greater Dhaka area, the capital of Bangladesh. The search for the dead ended on the 13th May, with a death toll of 1129. Approximately 2515 injured people were rescued from the building alive.
It is considered the deadliest garment factory accident in history, as well as the deadliest structural failure in modern history.
Warnings to avoid using the building after cracks appeared the day before had been ignored. Garment workers were ordered to return the following day and the building collapsed during the morning rush hour.
Now, two years since the disaster, the victims and families are still waiting for the compensation they deserve and brands such as Benetton are still yet to contribute to the compensation fund for Rana Plaza, which still needs $9 million. Two years is too long.
To commemorate the two-year anniversary and to highlight the problems of the international garment industry and what we can do about it, SEAD will present a collection of photographs that were captured at the scene, by Bangladeshi photography student, Atish Saha.
We will also be holding a second opportunity for a screening of Carla Novi’s film ‘Rana Plaza’, which we screened earlier this year. This will be on Wednesday 22nd April at 6.45pm, for a 7pm showing, also at Out of the Blue.
